At the urging of two of my doctors, I was prescribed Cymbalta to treat my tendon/joint/muscle/nerve pain and muscle spasms as a cure all rather than take one pill for the the tendon/joint/muscle pain, another for the nerve pain, another for the muscle spams or supplementing any combination therein with creams, gels and patches.
I was prescribed 20mg a day, the lowest prescribable dosage, which is 1/3rd of the recommended dosage to treat nerve pain. For the first six hours, I noticed a slight elevation in mood (it's also an anti-depressant), new neuropathies consisting of tiny, electrical zings at random spots on my body, the sensation of the skin on my left ankle undulating, and a sudden but fast pressure sort of pain behind my left ear. I noticed no difference or improvement in any of my tendon/joint/muscle/nerve pain nor my muscle spasms.
I should note that I took the pill following eating as this was recommended to prevent nausea. I did not experience any nausea until 6 hours after I took the medication and within a half hour of the nausea coming on I had violently vomited. *Warning for the squeamish * The food I vomited, which I had eaten both prior to and several hours after taking the Cymbalta was almost completely undigested. There were, also, traces of blood in my vomit. I sent both of my doctors emails telling them what had happened and begging for another solution as I clearly could not tolerate this medication and, even if I were willing to put up with random vomiting, I can't live if I can't digest food.
The next day, I felt absolutely exhausted as though I were hungover, but without a hangover headache. The neuro symptoms I experienced from the medication had worn off, but I was still nauseated. However, I did notice a marked decrease in my nerve pain.
It's now two days after that and I still feel unnaturally exhausted, but continue to experience fewer neuropathies than I did before taking the pill on Friday evening. I should note that I've been enormously sedentary since that time and that lack of movement, for obvious reasons, tends to quiet my nerve issues to some degree. However, this feels like some of the neurological storm I was experiencing has possibly been interrupted by that one dose of Cymbalta.
I'm waiting to hear back from one of my doctors about this. But the other emailed me suggesting I break open a capsule and just sprinkle a pinch of the little balls in juice. I wrote back asking if it were safe to take 10mgs of the stuff on an as needed basis and he responded that 5mgs would be a safer bet given my extreme sensitivity. Has anyone tried taking Cymbalta on an as needed basis?
Have any of you been able to tolerate the medication on a regular basis? Has it worked for your nerve pain? Did you experience any side effects similar to or differing from the ones I did? Etc. Please, share your experiences with this medication.
