This paper discusses established benefits from clinical trials and clinical studies of prebiotics, in gut flora, metabolic processes, Syndrome X, diabetes Type 2, and the immune system. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20920376
Cautionary approach if you suffer inflamed stomach lining,
candida, dysbiosis, and other digestive issues. If prebiotics cause symptoms avoid, till the digestive issues are resolved.
One of the books I am reading presently, explains the connection of functional villi in the lining of the gut, spleen, thymus, pancreas, bile, liver and kidneys etc.. The author mentions that sometimes broths are inappropriate. Eating small pieces of yeast daily twice a day could be helpful.
The author suggests specific diets rather than vits and supps to address digestive issues. Fasting if health permits once or twice a month as restorative. Rear lamb and beef, lightly cooked eggs and raw milk, are easier to digest. The importance of salt is mentioned. (In a previous post, recent articles in cardiology journals advise heart failure patients to have normal salt intake, rather than low salt diet, mortality rates were higher amongst those who had a low salt diet). Lastly, depending on digestive issues, it can take a year, two or even three years to reverse disease process.
I heard of a product called Symprove, manufactured in the UK
being very helpful. It uses fermented barley to grow four bacteria, namely, L. plantarum,, L. acidophilus, and E. faecium, L. rhamnosus. I know three people who found it helpful, including a Crohn's Disease sufferer. I haven't tried it, and was advised not because of sensitivities and allergies. (No financial ties with Symprove, only sharing).
Neat article about small intestines and villi. library.thinkquest.org/16421/noframes/systems/digestive/small_intestine.htm
Easy to read comments about gut health.
